A couple weeks ago we had the pleasure of hosting Ann Sperling, winemaker of both Sperling Vineyards & Southbrook, for the East meets West Dinner at Fusion Grill. While I enjoyed her talks over the course of the dinner, I personally got to spend some one on one time with her and, let me say, picking the brain of a winemaker who is so experienced and knowledgeable is a real treat. Not only did I learn an enormous amount about her wines, I also discovered what a pioneer she has truly been.
Not only does she create the extensive portfolios of these two vineyards, she was the driving force behind Malivoire and now a brand new winery, Versado, in Mendoza, Argentina. It is people like Ann that have been a true advocate for sustainable & organic practices, incorporating them into all her vineyards and encouraging other winemakers to do the same. And talk about diversity. She has crafted heavy, weighted reds like the Southbrook Whimsy! Winemaker’s Red, a Bordeaux blend with beautiful notes of ripe cherries & chocolate, to the Sperling Market White, a light, slightly sweet blend that is my new go-to patio wine for the summer.
At dinner, while modest about her creations she donned a pin on her lapel that signified her work & commitment to the organic practices she follows. A perfect representation for someone who does her part to balance the environment and create beautiful things…you guessed it, a lady bug.
Thank you to Ann for a great visit & all the work you do for Canadian wines.
